K-W Chinese School

Autumn Newsletter

September 25, 2010.

The K-W Chinese School (KWCS) would like to extend a warm welcome to all our new and returning families. Our staff and volunteers are energized and eager to embark on a new academic year and we look forward to providing a valuable educational experience for our more than 400+ students.

1. Fall registration is on-going for all new and returning students. A fee of $50, payable by cheque, can be made out to the “K-W Chinese School”. This fee will cover the cost of textbooks and teaching materials provided throughout the school year. If you have registered, but have yet to pay, please drop off your cheque to the school as soon as possible. Please also note, the Credit Course registration deadline is October 16th.

2. All Mandarin and Cantonese Elementary Classes will run from 9:00am-11:30am. Mandarin and Cantonese Credit Courses will run from 9:00am-12:15pm. Students are to enter the school through the main entrance on Hazel Street. Students in JK through Grades 3 can be picked up at the entrance to the left of the main entrance, also on Hazel Street.

In order to ensure student safety, parents who wish to remain in the school after 9:30am must sign the Visitor’s Log Sheet in the Main Office. We encourage all visitors to leave the hallways and remain in the cafeteria for the duration of the morning while classes are running.

3. The Mid-Autumn Festival Lantern Design Contest has been extended and lanterns will be accepted until October 2nd. There will be a total of 12 prizes awarded to the winning lanterns and a minor prize awarded to all other participants. Please refer to our website for more information.

4. Back by popular demand, the KWCS is once again offering a number of Chinese Cultural activities to develop and encourage Chinese culture. These interest courses will start on October 2nd and will run for the duration of the school year. Registration can be completed directly online at our KWCS site.

For parents of students who have pre-registered and who have received confirmation of acceptance into these courses, payment can be made at the Main Office. Both cash and cheque will be accepted.

5. The Lion Dance Program, sponsored by the Central Ontario Chinese Cultural Centre (COCCC), is now recruiting strong, energetic and committed students from the KWCS to join the team. We are looking for the following:

Male and female students between the age of 10-15 years. A martial arts or gymnastics background is not essential, but can be an asset. October practices will be held at the KWCS in Gym 3 on Saturdays between 11:30am-1pm, starting on the 16th. November and December practices will be held on Sundays between 3:30-5:30pm, with a location to be announced at a later date. All parents are required to assist in the transportation of their own team member(s) and any equipment to and from the performances.

Please visit the KWCS website; the deadline for sign up will be October 16th and any further inquiries can be made by emailing Lynette at: lynette.chan@kwcschool.com.

6. Our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive will be held on October 2nd. Staff and students are encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items to donate to the Food Bank and all items may be dropped off in the box provided outside of the Main Office. We thank you in advance.

7. This past summer, the KWCS was able to offer for the first time a full-day summer school program. This was a great success and we look forward to offering again this program to you in order to meet your needs for continued language education.

8. Finally as a reminder, our website, www.kwcschool.com, is available to all students, parents and staff to access supplementary information regarding the KWCS. This source is both helpful and current and we encourage you to view this for yourselves as we continue to work towards keeping you and our community informed.

9. Important Dates to Remember:
